40/100GbE & OIF CEI

The
next generation Ethernet standards for higher capacity data networks are split between IEEE
and the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF). Very long distance transmission using complex
modulation schemes are covered by the OIF, and backplanes and chip to module connections at
rates above 10.3125 Gb/s are being worked on by OIF CEI (Common Electrical I/O). Other
aspects, including short to medium distance optical NRZ transmission fall to IEEE,
primarily within the 802.3ba effort.

40GBASE-KR4 (#8)

Backplane standard that uses identical links to the established
10GBASE-KR. Four lanes of 10.3125Gb/s data. Transmitter and Receiver electrical
characteristics are measured in exactly the same way as for KR. Receiver interference
tolerance testing is also executed the same way except all four transmitter lanes
need to be in operation and terminated.

nAUI (CAUI/XLAUI)
(#9, #10)
CAUI and XLAUI are optional implementations of the Physical Medium
Attachment (PMA) sublayer (AUI stands for Attachment Unit Interface, with “C” the
Roman numeral for 100, and “XL” the Roman numeral for 40). nAUI is a chip-to-chip
or chip-to-module retimed electrical interface. Receiver electrical test is
similar to 10GBASE-KR.

nPPI (Parallel Physical Interface) is an optional instantiation
of the 40GBASE-SR4 and 100GBASE-SR10 Physical Medium Dependent (PMD) layer,
assuming a non-retimed module. Its electrical test requirements are similar to SFP+.
