Question:
What is the difference between pre-emphasis and de-emphasis?
Answer:
De-emphasis, which is often used in test and validation vocabulary, and pre-emphasis,
which is commonly used in IC design and simulation, result in the same waveform shape.
The difference in terminology is due to the fact that de-emphasis considers the second
bit in a series of ones or a series of zeroes to be attenuated, whereas pre-emphasis
considers the first bit as sent with a larger drive level.

Science Puzzler
Q: When you turn on a
light switch, there is a tiny but measurable interval
before the light comes on. How long does it take? What
causes any delay – are you waiting for the electrons
in the wires to reach the light bulb? Once the current
is flowing, how soon does the light bulb begin emitting
visible light?
